Community Projects
We have a number of community projects that the West Oakland Chapter has decided to run concurrently as on-going projects. We are very supportive of sewing for community service and thank our generous members for their time and effort in giving back to those in need in our communities.
Chemo Service Scarf
Francoise Guttman created the CUTEST patterns for our community service chemo hat project! They are both so cute you’ll want to make them for yourself, too! Download the instruction and pattern.

Pillowcases for the Hawthorne Center between 6 and 7 Mile Roads on Haggerty. The Hawthorne Center services troubled children between 4 and 17. They would like to use these pillowcases as part of a “birthday present” for their residents and need at least 12 a month, so this will be a continuing project. The Chapter Board has voted to furnish kits for pillowcases for teen boys of appropriate fabric. If you would like to participate in this project using one of these kits, please contact your Neighborhood Group Leader.
While any pillowcase to fit a standard pillow is welcome, we are providing directions for easy to make pillowcases for your convenience.

Members of our other Neighborhood groups are also making these to support this heartfelt cause. Any materials are welcome and this project is a good one to use up larger scraps. Many members have already made them from fleece, cottons and blends.
Pattern: A Simple pattern is available from your Neighborhood Group Leader or Deborah Shoop. Completed pillows to be delivered to your Neighborhood Group Leader or Deborah Shoop. This project is very easy to sew and extremely quick. All it takes is large scraps and fiber fill!
Fabric Envelopes for the Cardiovascular Center of University of Michigan Hospital.
They have asked for our help in providing fabric envelopes for their bereaved families. Patients’ families are given materials and information to address practical and emotional needs and the hospital would like to provide these services in the much more personal presentation of a fabric envelope rather than a manila envelope or folder. Other hospitals have used this successfully and U of M would like our help to implement this service to their patient community. These fabric envelopes should finish to a size of 12″ x 14″. Any fabric is acceptable; however, members may wish to use quilted, upholstery or two layers of fabric in suitable colors and themes for a family in mourning. General instructions are available below. I will have samples to share at the Farmington and Novi Neighborhood Groups in January, and at the Howell and Ann Arbor Neighborhood Groups in the future.
The following tutorials on how to make fabric envelopes may be useful to you. Please remember to adjust the sizing on these tutorials for the size needed: 12 x 12 inches.
